Libraries Stewards Statement: Public Libraries are a statutory and not discretionary!

The following press release was published in this weeks Islington Tribune:

The Islington Libraries Unison Stewards Committee would just like to point out to Cllr West that Public Libraries are a statutory service and not one that the council can decide to offer! The relevant legislation is the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964.
Could we also point out to Cllr West that libraries are a lifeline to local communities in Islington and although she promised not to close any they have been 'hollowed out' due to staff and budget cuts and any further cuts would be catastrophic to the service!
Libraries play an important part in the educational, cultural and economic wellbeing of the Borough and any cuts are a false economy!
